Minuscule: Valley Of The Lost Ants Movie Review. Minuscule: Valley of the Ants is about the epic journey of a ladybug. The main bug is separated from its family early on, after an encounter with a gang of mosquitoes leaves him injured and unable to fly. He finds refuge in a tin filled with sugar cubes, which gains the attention of a brigade of friendly black ants. He befriends this group of ants and joins them on their trip back to their hill. Along the way, the bug and its new friends encounter a gang of red ants intent on taking all their sugar away from them.

The movie follows the bug and the black ants as they evade and eventually fight off the red ants. Minuscule started off as a series of six minute animated shorts.

Each took a little slice of insect life and expanded it into small adventures. Expanding this concept to feature length feels like a real struggle. The movie, with no dialogue and no defined characters, has trouble keeping one's attention all throughout its runtime. It has plenty of clever, beautifully animated moments, but it can be difficult to make a real connection to what's going on. In contrast to most animated features, the characters in this movie don't talk at all.

At most, they toot expressively, or make vaguely laughing sounds. While it is pretty refreshing to have an animated feature that isn't reliant on celebrity voices making one- liners, the lack of speech proves to be a problem as the movie goes on. With very few means of expressing personality, the characters aren't able to tell much of a story. It's all very cute, but the movie just isn't able to provide the narrative highs that one might expect from a feature length film. That aside, it would be a mistake to discount the craft that went into Minuscule.

The movie seamlessly blends real footage with its elegantly animated characters. The bugs are kept pretty simple; they're basically stripped down versions of their real life counterparts with big, expressive eyes affixed on them.

It's a clever piece of design that gives the bugs a measure of distinction while still allowing them to look fairly natural against the filmed backgrounds. Even without the benefit of the dialogue, the movie is often able to convey this sense of adventure, with the main character heading out into the unknown, stumbling into one grand quest after another. It's appealing because the movie never allows itself to be frantic. It keeps zooming during action sequences, undercutting the strange tension by reminding audiences of the smaller scale of these events. The thing is, Minuscule: Valley of the Ants never really justifies the move to feature length. While often clever, the movie wears thin by the middle act.

The narrative starts to feel like it's just drifting aimlessly, with vague, largely unintelligible scenes that really would benefit from some dialogue. The film might be a little too low key, in the end giving up too much of its ability to tell a story.

The project is interesting, but it doesn't feel altogether successful.
